PiratesIsla Orcas grew steadily larger in the distance. Fog shrouded the island in a thick mist, hiding many dangers in its veil. Shadowy figures shifted in and out of view, putting the entire crew on edge.
"Well, how long before we land?" The Captain asked his second mate, Inacio. "Another half hour and we'll be making landfall," Inacio replied. "Good. Make sure the crew is ready. Who knows what we'll have to go against on that island." The Captain said. "Yes, sir," Inacio said, scurrying off to do as The Captain ordered. The Captain was a mysterious man. Nobody knew his true name. Frequently the crew would whisper amongst themselves, trying to guess the feared man's name. Everyone in the crew had met The Captain in the same way. They were slaves or prisoners until The Captain had raided their vessels and liberated them as part of his crew. While they were all eternally grateful to him, it was always established that he was not one to be messed with. If anyone irritated him too much, there was a high likelihood they would end up swimming with the fish. After years of searching, The Captain was nearing his ultimate achievement, finding the lost treasure of Lady Orcas. Legend old and new told of the ancient lady before time. Lady Orcas was said to be the queen of the underworld, who ruled the armies of the dead. According to the legends, long ago she raided the surface of all its treasure. The treasure of a thousand kingdoms was said to lay on her hidden island. And soon it would be The Captains. "We're here Captain," Inacio said quietly. "Are you ready?" "Yes, I do believe I am." The Captain said coldly. The crew loaded into small landing boats, The Captain in his boat taking the lead. Isla Orcas was dead silent as they sliced through the night air. No one said so much as a word. The air filled with the sound of footsteps as they landed on the sandy shore. The silence surrounded them like a strange blanket. "Come now men, no time for hesitation." The Captain said, gesturing onward. "Lady Orcas's treasure is ours if we just get it." The island was covered in a thick rainforest, yet there was no signs of any animals anywhere. The only sound was that of The Captain and his crew traipsing through the heavy foliage. After hours of walking, they finally arrived at their long-awaited destination. Carved into the stone of a large mound were the ancient symbols of Lady Orcas. The Captain reached out and caressed the cold stone. Pressing the symbols in, loud machinery started working behind the wall. The stone face slid open, revealing a dark, empty cave. The Captain pressed on, lighting a torch to guide their way. It was dank and humid in the cave as the group of pirates pressed deeper into the earth. As the darkness grew heavier around them, they suddenly found themselves surrounded by light. The walls glowed with some kind of unknown magic. "We're finally here boys." The Captain said. "The treasure of Lady Orcas is just ahead." The crew all whispered excitedly amongst themselves. Soon they would have all the money they could ever want or need. The end of the tunnel opened up into a massive cavern filled with millions of pounds of gold, jewels, and fine craftsmanship. As The Captain stepped to the edge of the cavern, a single click filled the room. The Captain looked around to see what he'd accidentally triggered. He whipped around to see the end of the tunnel close off, sealing them away from the rest of the world. The room filled with a green gas that gave off a putrid odor. Nobody could breathe. They all fell to the ground, gasping for breathable air. As The Captain fell, he looked up to the ceiling. There, carved into the cold, uncaring stone were twelve words. "The greatest treasure of all is joining my army of the dead."

A CurseThere is something you must understand about curses. They can be very fickle things. If you aren't careful, then they very easily backfire on you. I wasn't very careful. This is my story and my warning to you.
It all started with Derk. He was the local school bully. Everyone hated him. He was always picking on anyone who even slightly annoyed him. Standing six and a half feet tall, it was no wonder everyone was too afraid to stand up to him. One day I finally had enough. I wanted to get back at Derk, show him how it was like to be picked on for once. I immediately went researching for ways to get back at bullies. My research led me to a shady website that claimed they had "real curses" for free. It was full of warnings saying that you had to be careful with the curses, or else. I didn't care. I just wanted revenge. If there was any chance any of these curses could get that for me, it was worth the risk. Many of the curses were absolutely brutal. Killing curse, eternal sleep curse, and the list went on. Finally, I was one that wouldn't eternally condemn, maim, or kill him. A curse of bad fortune. That should teach Derk a lesson. I immediately set to work on the curse. Luckily for me, the victim didn't have to be present to take effect. "Hominem aegre maledic Derk," I said, picturing the big bully in my mind. My hands glowed bright purple, and then it was finished. I couldn't wait to see the bully falling flat on his face and any other misfortune he might encounter. And then I immediately tripped. I brushed it off, figuring it was a sheer coincidence. And then other things started happening. Things that should have been secure would fall off shelves and land on my head. I would constantly trip over my own feet. It was almost as though I had been cursed. When I finally figured out it had backfired, I rushed back to my computer to find the cure. But the website was gone. Now I'm stuck with bad fortune. Hardly anything good happens to me. Even if something good does happen, it doesn't last for long. If I get a beautiful girlfriend, it lasts all of about a week before some new hot guy shows up and steals her from me. If I manage to win the lottery, the winning ticket is immediately lost. So here is my warning to you. Don't mess with curses. They are nothing but bad. And especially don't use curses brought to you "free" on the internet. GreedGreed has a way of corrupting
It can be disrupting Greed drives some mad And others to do bad Greed weaves its way Deep into your heart Until one day You fall apart Some say money Can buy happiness I find that quite funny Because for many it leads to unhappiness People throw their relationships away Just to get more gold Your life has no replay So why waste time on gold before you're old Money is useless It does nothing but harm It condemned Judas Much to his alarm Love of money goes nowhere It only leads to dark paths Where you can hardly breathe air And are thrown onto rafts Greed has a way of corrupting It can be disrupting Greed drives some mad And others to do bad And many to be sad And none to be truly glad Objects To LifeThe Pen
My name is Writey. I am a simple fountain pen, living a simple pen life. Most of the day I sit around, whether it's in a pen holder or my owner's pocket. I get to take in the views and enjoy my day. But what brings real fulfillment to my life is when I get used. The sweet release of creating. Whether I'm writing down important meeting notes, or awesome stray ideas, I get an amazing high from being used. I only fear the day when I run out of ink. That will be a bleak day indeed. But I won't think about that now, for now, I'm going to just do my best to please my master and give him my very best ink! The Hammer The name is Hammerhead. I work for a strong bearded builder. Together we create amazing structures. Although I am constantly in pain from being slammed into nails, I love the pain. The pain fulfills me and gives me purpose. I get withdrawals whenever I am not being used. Some may say that it's a self-destructive habit, but I don't think it is. After all, I'm fulfilling my purpose. When I feel the shocks of pain go through my metal and into my handle, the brief pain turns into ecstasy. I am full of scars internally and externally from my constant abuse, but I don't mind. I wear them proudly, each dent representing a nail driven in, an achievement to be proud of. The Plate I am Piatto the plate. I live to taste food. Although I can't actually eat, I love to experience the flavors of life. Lettuce, lasagna, even liver. And that's just the L's!! My friends tell me it's a bit of an addiction, but I insist I can stop any time I want. I don't need to taste food, I want to. It brings me such immense pleasure. Boy, do I love my flavors! The Teddy Bear I am Ted. I am evil incarnate! I exist only to get close enough to study human children. I plot and plan, getting ready for my day to strike. I will raise an army of my fellow teddy bears and together we will rule the world. I endure constant squeezing and stretching all for the teddy bear cause. The worst days are when I have to endure the L-word. LOVE. Why would anyone use such a horrid word when talking about me. Look at me, I'm hideous. I'm covered in fur and my eyes are glassy. I am supposed to be an unlovable spy. I simply cannot wait for my day to overthrow my fleshy overlords! SnakesSneaky, scaly,
They live in a valley Slimy, wormy Not worthy of taxidermy Patterned all pretty Not welcome in the city They have no pity Very nasty and gritty Some have a rattler The worst tattler Don't even speak like a prattler Natures guerilla battler Narrow slits for eyes Whoever is bit dies They have no allies They are an unpleasant surprise Sneaky, scaly, They live in a valley Slimy, wormy Not worthy of taxidermy I Climbed A Mountain!!!How's it going folks? I hope life is good for all of you. So this Friday I had an opportunity to hike a mountain with one of my school classes. And let me tell you, it was amazing! The fresh air, the views, the company, all of it was delightful! So, I'm going to give you the rundown so you can see just what a teenage author does during some of his free time. So lets hop right in. The First PartThe first part of our hike was relatively easy. Except I didn't feel so at the time. The thing you have to understand about me is, I am not a light guy, and I don't hike nearly as much as I want to. So this was a challenge for me. By this point my legs were already burning, as well as my lungs. I suppose it's a lot like life. The first part it retrospect is easy, but it certainly doesn't feel like it at the time. We grow up as children, without a care in the world, but it for some reason feels hard. And then the hard part strikes. Speaking of, here's where the hard part comes in. The Hard StretchIt was all nice and easy until we hit the hard part. We went practically straight up the mountain. I for one had to stop frequently to rest, and of course take pictures. All I can say though, it the effort is worth all those amazing views! Most of life is an uphill climb. Climbing up in age, climbing up the "corporate ladder," etc... But why climb if you don't take in the view of how far you've come, right? And then you reach the peak. The Peak! After hours of climbing, we finally reached the peak. This was it, the great success. And then I saw the lovely tower sitting on top. I wanted so badly to climb it, take the ultimate peak picture. But unfortunately no one was allowed to climb it, so I missed out on the perfect photo opportunity. Such is life. But we certainly need to take in the view and admire how far we've come. It's not every day you climb a mountain. And then you have to get down. The DownhillDownhill has its own challenges. It can be hard on the knees, but it can be darn spectacular. There was one spot where the mountain divided between nature and civilization. Take whatever lesson you like from that. We also checked out a cool detour called "The Living Room" which had neat stone furniture and a beautiful view. Anyway, that's just a little bit of my life. Conquering mountains, seeing the world. Living.
ExamsIt's Exam Day
I think it's time to run away Tests here tests there Tests everywhere! Scarier than spiders Created by those insiders Teachers, dreaded villains I think this school needs some penicillins Tests, such a virus So undesirous Infecting our schools Making the smartest of us look like fools Vile creatures I'd rather cheer on the bleachers Then have to take another test They make me so stressed Corrupted Our education interrupted All so the state can judge us It should be treasonous How I lothe exam day This is a good time to run away But I can't do that Else the system will make my life fall flat Something Behind You"There's something behind you." The four words everyone dreads. The hairs on the back of my neck stuck straight up, sending a shiver down my neck.
"Don't look now." My best friend said, trying to keep both of our levels of panic down. "But whatever it is seems to be waiting for you to move." "How the heck am I supposed to get rid of it if I can't move," I growled through clenched teeth. "I don't know man, but don't look at it." My best friend said shakily. I can't die without seeing whatever is behind me. I thought. Not wanting to wait another precious second, I whipped around to look at the creature. The creature was tall and skinny, with freakishly thin limbs and a pale, narrow head. The thing walked on four limbs, the front two looking like mutated human arms. It had an almost humanlike face and it grinned evilly at us, revealing large, rotted teeth. Its eyes were sickly yellow and there was no hair to speak of on its depraved body. A strange chattering sound like a thousand teeth in a bowl came gruesomely from its mouth. "What are you waiting for, RUN!" I shouted. We took off running. I didn't dare look behind me, not again. I listened for any sound of pursuit, but the woods were unnervingly quiet. After running for a solid ten minutes, we stopped and caught our breath. "What in the world was that?" My best friend said, his eyes wide as platters. "I have no clue, but I don't want to find out," I said. "Let's keep going. I think we lost it but I want to get out of these woods." We set out walking toward the road. I couldn't shake the feeling that the monster was still stalking us, staying just out of view. As we reached the road, I heard the shuffling of leaves behind us. As I turned around to look, I found myself suddenly lifted into the air. The creature held me up, examining me like a toddler would a snack. It made the creepy chattering sound filling the surrounding woods with the horrific noise. The beast moved me closer to its widening mouth. The last thing I saw was the pitch-black inside of its mouth, the rotted teeth closing around me. Why We Fear The DarkWhy do humans fear the dark? Some say it's because humans developed the fear to keep themselves hidden from predators lurking in the shadows. Others say it is simply connected to the fear of what we cannot see. I know the truth.
Humans fear the dark for one reason, and one only. The Entia Tenebris. Beings of darkness. They are creatures of the night, made of shadow and evil. Trolls, goblins, faeries. Countless creatures that lurked in the shadows in ages past. Until they all vanished one day, leaving us with our fear of the dark. But they are returning. Which is why I write this letter to you. To send you a warning. Leave civilization, get as far away as you can. Bring as much light with you as you can. The Entia Tenebris cannot exist where there is light. Never let the dark touch you. That's how they catch you. They will whisper to you, try to trick you into stepping into the dark. Never listen. I have studied the Entia Tenebris for years. I made a horrible mistake. I was on the edge of a great discovery. After studying myths and legends for decades I thought I knew enough to keep them back, to trap them. My pride was my downfall. Following all the clues, the hints, I found out what happened to the Entia Tenebris. I will relate it to you, in case perhaps someday you can fix my mistake. Long ago, the Entia Tenebris roamed freely, killing indiscriminately. It was a miracle they hadn't eradicated all other life on the planet. But then they met a species that could beat them. Humans. Humans had harnessed the power of light to keep themselves protected, even in the night. This enraged the Entia Tenebris, and they vowed to wipe humankind from the face of the Earth. But the Entia Tenebris soon discovered humans are smarter than any other creature. They found ways to fight the Entia Tenebris with light. Some called it magic, but it was a form of lost science. People were able to manipulate the very fabric of the universe itself, using it to fight against the Entia Tenebris. After centuries of fighting the Entia Tenebris, humans had enough. They devised a trap to confine the remaining Entia Tenebris. After much fighting and spilled blood, our ancestors managed to confine the Entia Tenebris in a tomb from which they could not escape. Until I came along. In my studies, I found the location of the tomb of the Entia Tenebris. My curiosity was out of control. I could not resist. So I went to the tomb, and I opened it. The Entia Tenebris tricked me into turning off my lights, and that was when they struck. They stampeded out, every being of darkness escaping back into the world. I am so very sorry I have doomed humanity. My only hope remains in you, and I pray you will be able to rediscover the so-called magic and use it to defeat the Entia Tenebris. Good luck, and until we meet again, I love you, my son Wacky Witches There is one thing you must understand, magic is real. All myths, legends, mysteries, cryptids, the whole lot are real and in our world. Just not in the way you would think. I believe it was Robert A. Wilson who once said,”All phenomena are real in some sense, unreal in some sense, meaningless in some sense, real and meaningless in some sense, unreal and meaningless in some sense, and real and unreal and meaningless in some sense.” This is the story of how I found out the truth, that gods and monsters, witches and devils are real.
I suppose it all started one autumn evening as I was walking along with a friend of mine. She and I were deep in a conversation of some kind or another and the time finally came that she had to go home. She said good-bye and went her own way. That's when all heck broke loose. I started off towards home and decided to take a shortcut through a graveyard. As I walked along in the gloom and mist, I thought I heard cackling. I, being the foolish young man that I am, decided to investigate. I followed the sound of the haggard laughs and talking until I came upon several shapes dancing and chanting around a large black cauldron atop a blazing fire. In the cauldron I could see that there seemed to be a strange mist, all full of colors and swirling, much like you would imagine a portal to be. As I crept closer I did my best to stay hidden. As the last twilight of the day faded the surface of the cauldron started to move uncontrollably until the surface exploded and the shape of what could only be described as a devil from the very pits of Tartarus seemed to appear. At that I was startled and took a step back, causing a branch behind me snap. The hunched figures spun around and looked right at me. Now that they were facing toward me I could see the details of their faces which were just as you'd imagine a witch from a fairy tale to look like, all green with moles all over their faces with hooked noses. The demon-like shape roared something that I could not understand and the witches came toward me. I was nearly paralyzed with fear, scared out of my wits because of what I had stumbled upon. Then, as the disgusting hags were nearly upon me, I heard a trumpet horn blow in the distance. Out of no-where, there came half a dozen people in hoods seemingly melting out from the shadows, with swords and bows and all manner of seemingly primitive weapons. They quickly leaped into action and quickly incapacitated the witches. Soon they were around the cauldron and the demon. As they gathered around I could see that the daemon was becoming quite agitated. One of them pulled from their neck a pendant with a crystal that seemed to be made of pure light. The person held the pendant to the shadowy form and said: “in the name of all that is good and light in the world, I banish you back to the realm of darkness from whence you came.” The form shuddered and then seemed to look right at me, its dark face seeming to penetrate my soul. In that moment I heard a voice in my head saying,” You have not seen the last of me, the darkness will rise and mankind will be destroyed. There will be a curse and none but the chosen shall break it!” And just like that, the monster disappeared with a mighty roar. Now that the beast was gone all the attention was on me. The figure who had used the pendant came toward me. In the light from the pendant, I could see that it was a girl. She was pretty, with brown eyes the color of chocolate, black hair that seemed to flow around her, and the sweetest looking face you ever could see. Then she punched me and my world went black. |
